Gennile Thomas Smith, a Black woman, mother, activist, and advocate from Halton, founded Halton Black Voices in 2020. This non-profit collective fosters a safe space for Black individuals and the 2SLGBTQQI community in Halton. It focuses on community building, awareness, education, and empowerment, while partnering with allies for reciprocal educational opportunities. Halton Black Voices has formed partnerships for projects like community healing gardens, events, and educational programs with Conservation Halton, YMCA Oakville, and both Halton District and Catholic District School Boards.
Gennile's leadership earned her the Inclusion, Equity, Diversity, and Accessibility Award at Oakville's June 2023 Community Spirit Awards.
